What You Should Know Before Hiring A Contractor

At Stonekraftz, we feel that an informed consumer is the best customer. For this reason, we have put together a check list of what we believe to be important factors to consider when choosing a contractor:

  1. It is a good idea to request proposals from more than one contractor.
  2. Compare the bill of material submitted by each contractor to make sure that each is offering the same products and or service.
  3. If you are satisfied that you are getting a fair price for the product or service, make sure that your contractor is licensed (here is a link to our license and insurance information on file with the NYC Department of Buildings).
  4. Ask for references. Check the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs to see if there have been complaints filed against the contractor. A Google search may also be helpful.
  5. Request a signed contact as well as a certificate naming you as insured against any damage the contractor may do to your home as well as any injuries he, his employees or you may suffer during or as a result of his work.
  6. Once you have the insurance certificate, call the insurer to make sure that the certificate is real.
